Roughly a year ago today George Smith disappeared on his honeymoon cruise. For those of you that have been reading WTGW for the past year you may remember that I wrote about this a while back. Unfortunately his family is still dealing with the mystery of his disappearance but it does appear that they are slowly making progress and at the very least making some waves in the cruise industry. What I viewed as an unfortunate event was when last week George's wife reached a settlement with Royal Caribbean. I don't know his wife and I probably never will but this struck me as a step in the wrong direction.I thought about this picture the other day and found it in one of my albums and thought that I would share it, it is a very old picture of George and a very skinny picture of myself.Tracy has told me that Drew Lufkin, one of George's best friends and someone that we went to Babson with is going to be on Inside Edition tonight at 7PM EST. Check it out if you can.
Those of you that are frequent readers of WTGW probably remember my post from back in August where I told the horrific story of George Smith. Well we are now 4 months later and George's family and wife are still without answers. They have cooperated with the FBI to no avail and have been treated poorly by Royal Caribbean so they have started to take this situation into their own hands.George's wife and family have started a website where they are offering a reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of individual or individuals that were responsible for his disappearance.Additionally there is some new proposed legislation that will make cruise lines more accountable and prevent them from hiding behind the international maritime laws that often protect them.
Ok so I've been trying to avoid writing about this for a while now because it just sucks and is very upsetting but I've got to talk about it. For those of you from Babson who have been hearing about this for the last month I apologize but I want others who read this site to know about it.For those of you in tune with current events you may have read or heard about the disappearance of George Smith who vanished from his honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean over a month ago. Since this story was first reported there has been a lot of speculation and rumors in various articles about what may have happened but it appears that the FBI may be finally making some progress. I'm not using this posting to speculate on what may have happened or go into details of his disappearance, rather I just want to say a few words about George. George lived 3 doors down from me freshman year and when you go to a small school you naturally become friendly with the people you live around, especially freshman year. "Big" George and I were pretty close freshman year because we were two, of a handful of people, that got put in a "substance free" dorm that hadn't requested it and because we enjoyed messing with and hassling those kids who had requested "substance free".I'm not going to make this out to be like we were best friends because we weren't and in fact I hadn't spoken or emailed with George in a few years, something I'm now regretting. But we had a lot of classes together, we would work on projects together and we would frequently chat on weekends to find out what each other was up to. George was a standup guy, fun to be around and now that I'm reflecting upon it he had a very similar personality as myself which is why we got along very well. I have a lot of funny stories and memories involving George that make me laugh out loud from time to time when I think about them.I've been extremely bothered by the whole situation and I know many others have as well and just talking about it on this site helps. I can only hope that there is some sort of closure soon. My thoughts are with his family, his wife, all of his friends and classmates from Babson and anyone else who knew George.
